Chapter Four

Patrick Schell ran out of the Student Union, past the Fine Arts Building and into the Green Derby. He found Brian Lautner, Alan Bradford and Jeremy Addams gather around a table, speaking in low voices. He dropped into the empty chair and helped himself to the pitcher of beer, using the only unused glass on the table.

“Are you guys ready for Dr. Richards’ special tutoring tonight?”

Nods of assent went around the table.

“Mid-terms are next week,” Brian said. “I wish it was this easy to get A’s in my other classes.”

“At least we can focus on our other courses, since we have English Lit locked up,” Alan put in.

“Speaking of being locked up,” Patrick said with a mischievous wink. They all burst out laughing, and then quickly quieted when he put a finger to his lips. “Shh! We don’t want to let anyone in on our secret.” He looked around to see if anyone was eavesdropping but no one seemed to be paying attention to them.

“Especially you, Alan,” Jeremy said with one eye brow cocked.

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve been getting a lot of extra sessions with Dr. Richards lately.”

Alan’s face reddened. “It has nothing to do with class.”

Jeremy snorted.

“He’s not the only one,” Patrick interjected, hoping to defuse the tension. “I had a special session last week, too.” He lowered his voice. “I asked Dr. Richards to torture me when he had me tied up. So he read Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to me for two hours.”

His friends didn’t react instantly, but a second later they all laughed. He breathed a sigh of relief.

“You do seem to be spending a lot more time with Professor Richards than Debbie lately,” Brian said.

“Yeah, well…” Alan stuttered.

“What’s wrong?” Patrick asked, concerned.

“Debbie kinda broke up with me,” Alan said.

“Kinda?” Jeremy blurted out. “Isn’t that like being sort of pregnant? Or somewhat in jail?”

Alan looked around the room before answering. “I finally asked her about bondage and if she’d be interested. She freaked out.”

“Why did you ask her that?” Brian hissed.

“Dr. Richards kept telling me that I should ask her. Since it’s something that I enjoy, he said that she should try it to keep me happy.”

“So she broke up with you because you asked her?”

“She called me a pervert and left. We’ve talked on the phone but I haven’t seen her in several days.”

“You didn’t tell her about you and Dr. Richards did you?” Brian asked.

“Of course not,” Alan snapped. “I’m not that stupid. But I think you’ll agree with me that we’re less stressed and doing better in all our classes since we’ve been getting special attention from him.” The other three nodded.

“Was it worth it to have Debbie break up with you?” Jeremy sneered.

Brian interrupted. “If you haven’t been getting extra credit, what have you been doing with Professor Kinky?”

“Nothing,” Alan muttered, lowering his gaze to his mug of beer as Patrick watched his face redden again. “Just talking,” he went on.

“What’s up with that?” Jeremy asked. “You becoming a couple or something?”

“Fuck you,” Alan shouted.
